Un journal en ligne est un journal paraissant sous forme électronique, en accès gratuit ou payant, soit sur le web soit sous la forme d’un PDF (portable document format) à télécharger. Un journal en ligne peut être couplé ou non avec un journal imprimé. Une des premières éditions électroniques comprenant l’intégralité d’un journal imprimé est celle du New York Times, lancée en mai 2003. En février 1995 est mis en ligne le site web du mensuel Le Monde diplomatique, premier site d’un périodique imprimé français. Monté dans le cadre d’un projet expérimental avec l’Institut national de l’audiovisuel (INA), ce site est inauguré lors du forum des images Imagina. Quelques mois après, plusieurs quotidiens imprimés mettent en ligne un site web: Libération à la fin de 1995, Le Monde et L’Humanité en 1996, etc. -

Un journal électronique est le plus souvent un journal en ligne (voir la notice suivante). L’expression "journal électronique" définit aussi le journal du futur, qui sera composé d’un papier-écran formant un support souple et permettant de télécharger à volonté un ou plusieurs journaux. Le journal électronique utilisera le papier électronique, à savoir un ensemble de pages souples s’apparentant au plastique ou au transparent actuel, avec affichage, modification et effacement des données par voie électronique. Plusieurs supports sont en cours de développement, par exemple le RadioPaper de la société E Ink, qui donnera les nouvelles du jour via l’internet sans fil.Voir aussi: E Ink, papier électronique. -

Premier journal imprimé de l’histoire, Relation paraît en 1605 à Strasbourg, alors ville du Saint Empire germanique, un siècle et demi après la création de l’imprimerie par Gutenberg en 1450 à Mayence. Relation est un hebdomadaire de quatre pages, lancé à l’initiative de l’imprimeur Johann Carolus, qui édite en allemand les dépêches ("Avisen") venues de plusieurs grandes villes européennes (Cologne, Rome, Venise, Vienne et Prague). Par exemple des nouvelles du pape, les faits d’armes des pirates de la Méditerranée, des inventions scientifiques, etc. Le périodique imprimé se généralise quelque deux cents ans plus tard, au 17e siècle. Le journal d’information populaire à grand tirage prend son essor à la fin du 19e siècle. Quant au journal en ligne, il devient monnaie courante à la fin des années 1990, quelques années après l’avènement du web. -
